Final resting place

At over seven square kilometres in size, the site, opened in 1877, is not just Hamburg’s biggest green space, but also the biggest park cemetery in the world; a total of 30,000 trees are located here. More than 1.4 million people are buried in the non-denominational main cemetery, including prominent Hamburg figures such as singer Hans Albers and theatre actress Heidi Kabel. The graves of the Schmidt and Koch (the maiden name of Helmut’s mother) families are found here. In November 2015, almost five years after Loki’s death, the name of her husband also needs to be engraved on the headstone. Even weeks after his burial, mourners leave behind quirky objects, such as »Labskaus« (Schmidt’s favourite local meat dish) tins and menthol cigarettes.
