Sustainable honour

Centrally located in the HafenCity development, the facility provides 128 young people from Germany and abroad with desperately needed accommodation for affordable rents. But Schmidt would probably be less happy with the fact that smoking is strictly prohibited in the building, which is opened on the third anniversary of his death. In the foyer, a memorial panel with a timeline pays tribute to Schmidt – as an economics student from 1945 to 1949, then as honorary senator of the university from 1983. Other student dormitories in Hamburg, which number 26 in total, also carry the names of historical figures, such as rectors Rudolf Laun and Emil Wolff or the Nazi opponents Margaretha Rothe and Sophie Schoop.
