From the end of September 1970, a major housing development is built on the south-eastern corner of the city, near the border with Schleswig-Holstein. The nearly 7,000 affordable housing units there are built by »Neue Heimat«, a company owned by trade unions. More than two years later, the building of commercial, medical and social infrastructure in the heart of the new purpose-built district begins. Schmidt makes high-profile appearances at both ceremonial events as economy and finance minister. But his Bonn colleague in the Cabinet who officially holds responsibility does not take part. »Neue Heimat« is wound up in 1986 following various financial scandals; the people in Mümmelmannsberg are not given their own underground station until 1990.
