Othmarschen years

The Schmidts manage to change their address in 1950 even without moving, when Lindenallee is renamed after the impressionist painter Lovis Corinth. The family, which has now grown to include daughter Susanne, shares the top floor of a villa with three other tenants. As a teacher, Loki continues to earn the lion’s share of their income, until Helmut finds work at the economy ministry after obtaining his degree in 1949. The following year, there was almost a much more dramatic change of address: on a work trip to the US, Schmidt meets an uncle who lives there, who offers him a senior role in his company. As we know, the Schmidts decide to remain in Hamburg.
