Helmut Heinrich Waldemar

The first child of Ludovika Elisabeth Hermine Therese (née Koch) and Gustav Ludwig Schmidt is born on 23 December 1918 in this Uhlenhorst hospital – only a few hundred metres from the couple’s apartment at the time in Barmbek’s Richardstraße. Two and a half years later, Helmut’s younger brother Wolfgang is born and completes the family. When raising the siblings, Helmut’s father – a teacher – emphasises strictness and orderliness, which means both children become very familiar with virtues such as obedience and self-discipline. The birthing clinic was closed at the turn of the millennium. Its buildings now form part of the Finkenau art and media campus, where several Hamburg universities are based.
