First own apartment

In November 1942, the couple, who have been married for four months, move into a roomy apartment in Barmbek’s Gluckstraße. The rent is 50 Reichsmarks per month. Although neither of them are earning particularly well, they invest 500 Reichsmarks into furnishing the rooms and even rent a piano. However, the married couple are unable to spend much time there together. Helmut, now a First Lieutenant in the Luftwaffe, is based in Berlin, while Loki continues to work in Hamburg as a teacher. Just nine months after moving in, the apartment is almost completely destroyed by an air raid – and with it most of their personal effects, including the piano. Both move into an apartment in Berlin shortly thereafter.
