Farewelling Loki

In what is probably Hamburg’s most well-known church, Helmut and daughter Susanne say goodbye to Hannelore »Loki« Schmidt, who dies on 21 October 2010 at the age of 91. Along with prominent political and societal figures, many »very ordinary« people pay their respects to the popular teacher and conservationist – as desired by Loki herself. After the death of the former Chancellor on 10 November 2015, a state funeral with 1,500 invited guests is held around two weeks later, also in St. Michael’s Church. As it is not possible for the public to participate, for security reasons, the event is broadcast on radio and television. The couple find their last resting place in Ohlsdorf cemetery.
