Tradition meets tradition

If Hamburg were a sovereign nation, then it would have had a national dish since 1795: »Labskaus« – loathed by many, but loved by Schmidt. The best version of it is served here, that’s his view. The dish is closely linked to the history of ports and seafaring: side dishes such as beetroot and pickles help to reduce scurvy, a disease caused by a lack of vitamins, while the mix of beef, potatoes, onions and spices can even be consumed without teeth if need be. Schmidt eats here for the first time on 23 December 1980 – his birthday – and regularly visits the restaurant after that. Perhaps it's true what the head of the restaurant says: »If you eat Labskaus, you’ll have a clear head for your whole life.«
