»Ebermann insults Schmidt«

A day before Schmidt’s 65th birthday, the city of Hamburg agrees to a proposal from the senate and gives Schmidt the key to the city for »outstanding achievements as a statesman«. Unlike the SPD and CDU, the Green Alternative List (GAL) – which has only been represented in Hamburg’s Parliament for a short period – strictly opposes making such an award. Before the vote, GAL member Thomas Ebermann speaks and laments the »hypocritical consensus« of the two big parties. He also accuses the former Chancellor of a »desire for crisis management« that endangers democracy. According to local press reports, Schmidt listens to the objection »stony-faced«, but politely offers his thanks »for the encouragement and controversy« at the subsequent reception in the ballroom.
