»Without a valid ticket«

A few weeks before graduating with his degree, Schmidt breaches the conditions of carriage and is required to pay the »increased fare« of five Deutschmarks. At the time, the young family lives in a rented flat in Lindenallee (renamed to Corinthstraße from 1950) in Othmarschen, near the Ernst-August-Straße stop. Tram line 30 – given a new number in 1957, before being terminated two years later – at the time connects Klein Flottbek and Eimsbüttel, via the Altona railway station. Since 1947, Schmidt has held various roles at the economy and transport authority. Around six months after the incident, he signs a regular employment contract with the agency; later, he even serves on the board of the transport company for a period.
